Denza B8: Laju Macam Sportscar, Selesa Macam Private Jet

When a Tank Decides to Become a Sportscar

The Denza B8 isn't a name most Bruneians would have heard two years ago. But with Maju Motors now bringing it into their Beribi Telanai showroom, that's about to change. Denza is BYD's premium luxury arm, think of it as their answer to what happens when you take serious engineering money and pour it into something that looks and feels like it belongs in a hotel driveway. The B8 is their flagship 7-seater PHEV, and it is genuinely one of the most interesting things to arrive in Brunei's automotive scene in a while. Part city executive, part Temburong weekend explorer, part sportscar.

Design & Exterior

The B8 makes no apologies for its size. At 5.19 metres long, it has a commanding road presence that makes even large SUVs look modest. The bold Galaxy grille up front pairs with what Denza calls Starship Wing LED headlamps. Dramatic names, but they do look genuinely striking in person. The full-LED tail lights carry the same spaceship-inspired aesthetic at the back. It's a polarising look that leans confidently into luxury territory, and it's hard to walk past without turning your head.

Interior & Comfort

Inside is where the Denza B8 really earns its luxury badge. The cabin design is centred around an aviation-style cockpit feel, complete with a retractable Star-Ring shifter and crystal-style switches that feel genuinely premium to touch. The material quality throughout is calm and cohesive, nothing feels thrown together. But the standout feature has to be the built-in fridge and oven: it can cool drinks down to -6°C or keep food warm up to 50°C. For a Brunei road trip to Ulu Temburong or a long drive down to Kuala Belait, that's not just a gimmick, that's actually useful.

Tech

The tech setup is genuinely class-leading for this price point. Up front you get a triple-screen configuration: a massive 17.3-inch 2.5K centre display, a 12.3-inch driver display, and a dedicated passenger screen. It's the kind of setup you'd expect in a fully specced German luxury SUV costing significantly more. Pair that with the Devialet sound system, one of the more respected audio brands in the premium space, and the B8's cabin becomes a genuinely enjoyable place to spend time, whether you're stuck in Kiulap lunch hour traffic or cruising through the Tutong corridor.

How Does It Drive?

Here's the thing about 570hp in a massive SUV. It shouldn't work, and yet it absolutely does. The Denza B8 is genuinely fast in a way that feels almost absurd for something this large and heavy. The AWD system puts the power down cleanly, and 4.8 seconds to 100 km/h is the kind of number that makes passengers grip the door handle. On smooth tarmac it's composed and planted. The honest caveat: the suspension tuning leans slightly firm, and on some of Brunei's rougher simpang roads, you do feel it. Not uncomfortable, but it's not the floatiest ride in this class. The flipside is that it feels more planted and controlled when you're pushing it. And parking a 5.19-metre car anywhere near Kiulap during lunch hour? That's a challenge no amount of tech can fully solve, though the parking cameras definitely help.

Price

The B8 is positioned at the top end of what Maju Motors offers, but the value case is real. You're getting a full luxury SUV experience, Devialet audio, triple screens, Nappa leather, 570hp, built-in fridge, at an estimated price that significantly undercuts what you'd pay for a Lexus LX or equivalent European rival. As always with Maju Motors, promotions can move the final figure, so it's worth heading to the Telanai showroom directly for the confirmed OTR.

Verdict

Laju macam sportscar, selesa macam private jet, tapi sado macam tank. Apa lagi mau? The Denza B8 makes an almost unreasonably strong case for itself. The technology is the most advanced suite you can get at this price, the performance is legitimately shocking for a 7-seater, and the interior quality punches well above what the price tag suggests. The firm suspension on rough roads and the sheer parking challenge of a 5.19m body are the honest trade-offs. But if you're in the market for a full-size luxury PHEV and you want to stretch your money as far as it'll go, the B8 is the one to look at.

  • Practicality: 4/5 - Massive inside, but parking at Kiulap during lunch hour is a nightmare
